About Tonya Folkerts

Tonya Folkerts is a fabric artist who delights in transforming worn clothing, vintage linens, and fabric scraps into original works of art.

She draws inspiration from her garden, the places she’s lived—Kansas, Kentucky, and Iowa—and above all, her faith. A theater artist by training, Tonya takes a Yes, And... approach to design.

“In improv, we learn not to edit our first thoughts, but just to go with them. My first draft of every piece is just me trusting and moving forward with those first thoughts.”

With technical proficiency, whimsy, and touch of humor, Tonya creates one-of-a-kind works with a nod to historic folk art. She hopes her fabric stories speak to God’s unfailing love, and serve as a reminder that beauty can be found in the most unexpected places.

Tonya specializes in collage and raw edge appliqué. Her work has appeared in Do It Yourself Magazine, at Art on the Lake Festival, Art House, Bare Root Trunk shows, Beez Rustic Treasures, Homespun and art shows throughout the state.
